Day of Mindfulness
In the Tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhẩt Hạnh
Led by Venerable Brother Thich Chan Huong Hue
Sunday, October 26, 2008
In Davie, FL
From 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Venerable Brother Thich Huong Hue is a Monastic Dharma Teacher who was ordained as a Buddhist monk by Zen Master Thich Nhẩt Hạnh (Thây) in Plum Village, France, in 1989. He currently serves as the Abbott of Tu Viện Hương Hải, a Vietnamese Buddhist Monastery in Florida.

This Plum Village-style Day of Mindfulness (DOM), conducted in English and Vietnamese, will provide a wonderful opportunity for those who want to deepen their mindfulness practice with time for reflection and silence in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhẩt Hạnh. Throughout the day, we will enjoy periods of sitting and walking meditation, chanting, and mindful movements, as well as Deep Relaxation, a Dharma Talk by Venerable Brother Thich Huong Hue and Dharma Sharing from the fourth-fold Sangha. We will enjoy a traditional Vietnamese lunch, tea ceremony, and dinner lovingly prepared by the monastic Sangha. There will also be an opportunity for those who wish to formally take the 5 Mindfulness Trainings to do so at the end of the day.

Please arrive before 8:00 A.M. so you can relax and absorb the peaceful beauty of the natural surroundings and to help the Sangha set up for the day. Please respect and appreciate noble silence during the duration of the formal activities of the day. An opportunity for sharing and mindful conversation will be provided towards the end of the DOM.

This event is free an open to all practitioners. However, your generosity in providing a donation or Dana for the monastic and lay Sanghas is gratefully accepted and encouraged. Your kind donation to the community of practitioners or Sangha helps us defray the costs associated with this DOM and supports our activities.

Thich Nhẩt Hạnh’s CDs, DVDs, books, and Sangha T-Shirts with his calligraphy will be available during the DOM.

To register, please e-mail Tony at strega_flies@earthlink.net. Directions and a list of what to bring will be sent to all registered participants. Please register as soon as possible so we can plan the meals for the day.

This event is open to all Sangha members, film and food lovers,

so bring your friends!

Main Feature: Peace Is Every Step is a documentary film narrated by Ben Kingsley about the life and work of leading Vietnamese Zen Master, poet, and author Thich Nhẩt Hạnh. Throughout his career, Nhẩt Hạnh has had a profound impact on contemporary thinking and, importantly, social action. His efforts to achieve an early peaceful end to the American war in Vietnam earned him a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a forty-year exile from his homeland. He is the author of many books including the bestsellers Being Peace, Living Buddha/Living Christ, The Miracle of Mindfulness and Peace Is Every Step.

Peace Is Every Step is an intimate and direct portrait of a monk who has lived through war and fought back with meditation, love and grace under fire, testimony to the faith that simple practices and insights drawn from (but not by any means limited to) the Buddhist meditative tradition can help change conditions for the better: on a personal level, in the family, in the community, in a nation, and in the world.

Produced and directed by Gaetano Kazuo Maida. Filmed on location in Plum Village, France; Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington, D.C. and at retreats around the U.S. Includes rare archival footage from Vietnam in the 1960s and appearances by Joan Halifax, Claude Anshin Thomas, Stephen Batchelor and other well-known authors and activists.

Special Guest Speaker/Dharma Lecture: After the main feature, Venerable Brother Thich Huong Hue will provide a Dharma Talk about his experience living and working with Thây Thich Nhẩt Hạnh in Plum Village, France. Brother Huong Hue was ordained as a Buddhist monk by Thây in Plum Village, in 1989. He currently serves as the Abbott of Tu Viện Hương Hải, a Vietnamese Buddhist Monastery in Florida.

Bonus Feature: Each of My Steps is a Prayer. Following the Dharma Talk, the audience is invited to the South Florida Premiere of Each of My Steps is a Prayer, a Documentary film about Zen Master Thich Nhẩt Hạnh’s 2007 return to Vietnam (Thich Nhẩt Hạnh was exiled from his homeland until 2005).

This event is open to the public and provided at a very low cost in the Buddhist tradition of generosity or Dana. Thus, your kindness in providing an additional donation for the goods received is gratefully accepted and encouraged.
